Letter From The
Worthy Matron

Greetings from the new Worthy Matron at Lake Harriet #202!!

Not exactly new as I went up the line once before in 1996-97. When my friend Joan Pederson and I were initiated in 1992, I remember being so impressed with an organization that seemed to exist solely for the purpose of being nice to each other!

Joan and I went in lockstep up to be Worthy Matrons. Along the way, and during the years since, we have both gotten a deeper understanding of all the things that make Eastern Star wonderful; its moral teaching, its fellowship and deep friendships, its charitable giving and its community outreach. The first time in line I was recruited mid-year from the star point station of Martha right into the North (Associate Conductress). It happened again this time too, mid-year straight from Martha to Associate Conductress, only this time I volunteered.

Martha is one of my favorite stations but I may avoid holding it again!

However, I remain very committed to Eastern Star Values. Our Worthy Patron Bob Holden, is in agreement on this and plans to offer some of his ideas throughout the coming year.

Bob promises to be a great Worthy Patron. He hasn't quite yet mastered the phrase "yes, Worthy Matron" but he did surprise me with a birthday cake at refreshment time last meeting (March 24). He has a fine sense of humor too.

My fun symbol this year is fairies. Bob vacillated between choosing a giraffe or a lion as his fun symbol. His wife, Marlene finally presented him with a very cute stuffed lion and his impromptu remark was that his was a happy lion who just might eat all the fairies! I'm arming them with little plastic cocktail swords.

The fun symbol of the upcoming Worthy Grand Matron on the state level is marbles. All of the Worthy Matrons this year are called "Donnas' Marbles". Several years ago Donna lost a voting marble during a demonstration and has enjoyed the reputation of losing her marbles ever since.

Our Chapter has exciting plans upcoming:
  • May 6-8 is Grand Chapter in St Cloud.
  • May 22 is our Spring Salad Luncheon, a fund raiser. It is open to all so please consider joining us at 12 noon at the lodge. The cost is $6 per person at the door.
  • June 12 our Social Club will have our summer picnic 12 noon at the lodge. Sloppy Joes plus .....
  • June 17-19 will be our big fundraiser, the annual Garage Sale.
  • July 3 we will be seen riding or walking in the Edina Independence Day parade along 50th St.
  • A community project that we will be supporting all year long is the local Joyce Food Shelf.
Ours is a great mix of work and fun and we welcome your inquiries!

What do we do?  ·  top

So, what does Lake Harriet Chapter do?
This year, we will have several dinners, each benefiting a charity or worthy cause. We’ll have a garage sale. We’ll throw in a few parties and nights out. We’ll cruise Lake Minnetonka with margaritas in our hands. We’ll volunteer at the cancer hospital, Masonic Home, and the patriotic unit, among others.

We support our Youth Groups, Job’s Daughters, Rainbow, and DeMolay, along with supporting many other organizations through time served and monetary donations.

  Eastern Star History  ·  top

The Order of the Eastern Star was formed about the year 1850 to provide an organization for the wives and female relations of Master Masons. This organization was unique in it’s time – in 1850, it was a stretch to imagine a woman being much other than a teacher professionally, yet here was an organization created for women to run. In fact, The Order of the Eastern Star was founded almost 70 years before the Girl Scouts of America.

The stated purposes of our organization are: Charitable, Educational, Fraternal and Scientific; but there is much more to it than that.
